Testing
We partner with Dyslexia Specialists of Central Illinois to offer and provide comprehensive language and literacy testing.
Testing areas include:
Dyslexia
Dysgraphia
Developmental language disorder (DLD)
Speech sound disorder
Areas of executive function
Our testing process uses best practice set forth by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association. This includes assessing written language skills in conjunction with spoken language skills. Written language is reading and writing, spoken language is listening and speaking.
Why assess both spoken and written language? Empirical research has found that IQ testing does not predict reading outcomes. Instead, spoken language skills do.
“Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.” – International Dyslexia Association
Some of the risk factors associated with dyslexia include a family history with difficulty reading or spelling, delayed communication as a toddler, a history of speech therapy and difficulty learning letter names and sounds. A child may show inconsistent mastery or proficiency in earlier learned concepts.
